Structured Separation™
Structured Separation™ offers couples a sensible alternative to staying in an unhappy marriage or filing for divorce. It is also addresses the needs of couples that have personal or religious beliefs that prohibit divorce.
A Structured Separation™ is based on a mediated separation agreement that addresses all the issues of living apart. A Structured Separation™ can also form the basis of a Legal Separation filed with the court. All court documents are prepared and filed by licensed legal services under attorney supervision.
Both options offer the couple a sound, sensitive, and dignified approach to resolving confusion and unhappiness in their lives.

Whenever you're in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude.
William James, American Philosopher and Psychologist, Leader of the Philosophical Movement of Pragmatism, 1842-1910
What we call reality is an agreement that people have arrived at to make life more livable.

Many couples struggle with the life decision “Should I stay in this marriage or should I leave it?” They are unsure about being married, and unsure about being divorced. Some couples have strong personal or religious convictions against divorce, such as in Catholic marriages. Dr. Grether, a Clinical Psychologist and Certified Mediator, specializes in "Mediation That Prevents Litigation & Preserves Relationships." He provides a sensible, sensitive, and dignified approach to reducing confusion and uncertainty, and an alternative for couples whose beliefs prohibit divorce. This approach is Structured Separation™.
Structured Separation™ Issues
Structured Separation™ is based on a mutually acceptable mediated separation agreement between the partners that addresses the issues involved in living apart. Through a series of mediation sessions, all the Financial, Family, Emotional and Social aspects of separation are examined and livable agreements are made.
DIVISION OF ASSETS & LIABILITIES
LEGAL & PHYSICAL CUSTODY
CHILD SUPPORT
CO-PARENTING PLAN
SPOUSAL SUPPORT
FAMILY SEPARATION
EMOTIONAL SEPARATION
SOCIAL SEPARATION
The Structured Separation™ meets the needs of everyone involved. For couples with minor children, a co-parenting plan is developed that includes a detailed description of the rights and responsibilities of legal and physical child custody.
If, after a period of time, the couple decides to reunite, the Memorandum Of Understanding or the Legal Separation is rescinded. Because of personal or religious beliefs, such as in Catholic marriages, some couples decide to live apart indefinitely, with the Memorandum Of Understanding and Legal Separation in place. Likewise, if the couple decides to proceed with a divorce, the appropriate court documents are filed for the dissolution of the marriage.
